Which second hand iPhone should you choose?
To make things a little easier, we’ve made it simple to weigh up the benefits and compare the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Design & Appearance
Apple hasn't made any groundbreaking changes to the design of the iPhone 14 series. Keeping the same rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape. If you cast your memory back far enough, you may remember the same shape on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are almost identical to the iPhone 13 Pro with an all-glass front and a textured matte glass back that sandwich a frame made from surgical-grade stainless steel. The stainless steel frame and the colour of the glass at the back to match keeping things cohesive.
You don’t have to worry about durability, as yet again the Ceramic Shield made the cut for the iPhone 14 series. The Ceramic Shield provides improved durability and 4x better drop performance. It also provides better protection against scratches and everyday wear and tear. The Ceramic Shield is made by embedding ceramic nanocrystals into the glass through a high-temperature crystallization process. Ceramic Shield also uses dual ion-exchange, this means increasing the size of the ions so they’re more solid. The combination of these two things makes for tougher glass, which is both more resistant to bumps and scratches, and also more likely to stay in one piece (rather than shattering) if it does get damaged. The durability being another reason you can be confident buying a used iPhone. The iPhone 14 series is also water resistant up to 6 metres for 30 minutes.
Apple removed the notch for the iPhone 14 series, instead introducing the Dynamic Island. Design wise, the Dynamic Island consists of a pill-shaped cutout and a circular cutout, both housing the TrueDepth camera system. Blending the pill-shaped cutout and circular cutout into one larger pill, which is 30 percent smaller than the notch.
There are antenna bands at the top and sides of the phone, along with a Lightning port for charging. The physical SIM hardware remains, unlike the US models, where it was removed.
A square camera bump is located at the back of the iPhone 14 series, and the bump is larger than it was last year to accommodate new camera technology. There is a triple-lens camera setup, and each individual lens is also larger in size.
One of the main features of our used iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max is the A16 Bionic chip. What is the A16 chip? A16 Bionic chip with 6-core GPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. At launch, Apple claims it’s the fastest chip ever in a smartphone. It means more power efficient which translates to great battery life while still being very responsive. They also claim it’s 40% faster than the competition. The A16 Chip holds a new component known as The Display Engine. This enables a 1Hz refresh rate, Always On function, the higher peak brightness and advanced antialiasing for the super smooth Dynamic Island animations.
It also means an upgraded camera with the A16 chip powering a Photonic Engine that improves low-light performance across all of the lenses in the iPhone 14 Pro models. The Telephoto, Wide, and front-facing TrueDepth cameras offer 2x better low-light performance with the Photonic Engine.
The Photonic Engine means an improved 12MP camera, with an enhanced hybrid focus system, partially powered by the new autofocus capability. This means clearer selfies. This is a Deep Fusion upgrade and provides a slightly wider F1.5 aperture included in the iPhone 14 series. Photonic Engine is basically a computational photography technique that enhances the photos taken in mid-to-low lighting conditions. It helps the iPhone deliver better colour, impressive detail, and higher brightness while preserving subtle textures in photos through the way the image is processed. It uses AI to improve low-light photography across all three cameras.
Meanwhile, the upgraded Ultra Wide lens supports 3x better low-light performance. More on this later when we explore the differences in cameras for iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The iPhone 14 series has another amazing new function, the Crash Detection feature (which is also available on all of the 2022 Apple Watches) is something you will hopefully never need to benefit from, but it could have the potential to save your life. The iPhone 14 can actually detect if you are in a car accident and will contact the emergency services on your behalf.
Let’s look at some of the differentiating features on each model and what that means for your used iPhone experience.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offer the aerospace-grade aluminum which is less prone to bending with a brushed aluminum finish. While the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is made from surgical-grade stainless steel. It’s tough and anti corrosive with a shiny stainless finish. This durable exterior has stayed over because it’s served iPhone users well. Yet another reason to feel at ease when purchasing your second hand iPhone.

The iPhone 14 series all models come with an OLED screen with a Super Retina XDR display and High Dynamic Range (HDR). Offering a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offer 1,200 nits of maximum brightness.
Whereas the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer 1,600 nits of maximum brightness and 2,000 nits peak brightness for outdoors. The iPhone 14 series is impressive in its display with vibrant colour and true black that any visual content is a delight. Where it differs is the Pro models outdoor brightness, which is the brightest we’ve ever seen on a smartphone.
Another new feature exclusive to only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, is an Always-on display feature. This is a low-power mode that lets you see some basic information at glance while your phone screen is off.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is improved with a larger main 12MP sensor on its dual camera system with larger pixels, a faster f/1.5 aperture, and a touted 49% improvement in low-light performance. Sensor-shift image stabilization comes as standard.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have three lenses placed over a larger camera module thanks to the new 48MP main sensor. The new 48MP main sensor can do 2x optical zoom on its own, but in tandem with the 12MP 3x telephoto lens, you can get some nice zoomed photos. The ultrawide camera on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will see up to 3x improvement. In contrast, the pictures are only 2x better on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus ultrawide shooter. The 12MP ultrawide camera on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max lets in three times more light. Even the flash has seen an improvement, and for pro photographers, the iPhone 14 Pro can capture a huge 48MP photo with the ProRAW feature, unlocking a ton of potential for later edits.
iPhone 14 series record videos in HDR and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also allows you to record video in Apple ProRes. ProRes provides an unparalleled combination of multistream, real-time editing performance, impressive image quality, and reduced storage rates.
The iPhone 14 series all offer an upgrade on Cinematic Mode — it can now record at 4K and you have a choice between 24 FPS and 30 FPS (it's locked to 1080p at 30 FPS on iPhone 13). Also, editing Cinematic Mode videos in post allows you to refocus and blend 24 FPS and 30 FPS videos in the same project, with the end result taking a lower frame rate. To put it simply, Cinematic Mode (24fps) applies a depth-of-field effect keeping the subject of your video sharp & in focus while creating a beautifully blurred foreground and background. 24fps is the standard for filmmakers which grants the cinematic look derived from motion blur. Whereas, shooting at 30fps will give you a standard video - great for Insta & Youtube. Great for content creation on your used iPhone..
The iPhone 14 series will automatically identify the subject to and keep it in focus. When a new subject is identified, the focus point automatically transitions to the new subject. While recording, you do have the option to either manually adjust the point of focus, or change it later in the Photos app. You can use quick toggles at the top of the screen to change the video resolution and frame rate. After you record a video in Cinematic mode, you can remove or change the cinematic effect. Apple has also introduced Action Mode for video. This provides an upgrade to bring extreme stabilization for super-smooth video footage.
In summary, we love our used iPhone 14 series. To weigh up which used iPhone is for you. The iPhone 14 has some great features with the same sized screen as the iPhone 13 Pro, a dual camera system, including an ultrawide camera instead of a telephoto camera. The iPhone 14 Plus is the same larger 6.7-inch display as the iPhone 14 Pro Max at a lower price point. Includes cinematic mode for video recording.
The iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the introduction of the A16 Bionic chip. This means better power efficiency, battery life, faster performance. Brighter displays, an upgraded camera with Photonic Engine that improves low-light performance and captures the most vibrant of colours.
