The operating system rivalry between Android and iOS is a long-running feud steeped in rich history and dates as far back as the first smartphones. Deciding between the two operating systems is also a pivotal moment in a person’s life and tends to be the ecosystem they stay with forever.

With that being said, your operating system isn’t a permanent, life-long decision. If you want to swap ecosystems, you can. With recent advancements and upgrades to technology, it’s easier than ever to swap from an iPhone to an Android device, like Samsung, and vice versa. There are many data transfer tools available, like Google’s universal iOS-to-Android switching service, which is available on any phone running Android 12 OS or higher.

If you’ve finally decided to move on from Apple’s iPhones to see if the pasture is greener with Samsung’s Galaxy devices, our guide is for you. We’ll be covering everything you need to know about moving between the operating systems and brands.

In this guide, we’ll also be covering the difference between Android devices and iPhones. We’ll also be exploring the different reasons why someone might want to switch to an Android phone and how to transfer all your data, like contacts, photos, and documents.

The Difference Between Android and iPhones

While Android devices and iPhones share many features in common, like apps, which make it possible to easily move between ecosystems, there are many differences, too. Aside from the hardware design, the main difference between Android phones and Apple’s iPhone devices is the operating system.

Apple’s smartphones use the iOS operating system, whereas Android phones use the Android operating system or a modified variant of it, depending on the manufacturer. For example, Google uses the stock Android operating system in their Pixel devices, while OPPO uses ‘ColorOS’.

The difference between iOS and Android operating systems is in their core principles. Android is designed to be more customisable and features an ‘open’ ecosystem. Android typically allows users to personalise their phone to a greater extent, install third-party applications more easily, and even change their entire launcher.

iOS, on the other hand, features an ecosystem that is typically described as a ‘walled garden’. For example, the only method for downloading new apps is through the App Store, which is tightly curated by Apple. This has its advantages, like better security.

While the user interface isn’t as customisable as Android, it does provide a more intuitive and streamlined experience. Apple is usually more user-friendly, especially for people who aren’t as tech-savvy.

Because of Apple’s walled and controlled ecosystem, its integration with other devices (like Macs and iPads) is seamless. There is no ‘better’ operating system when it comes to iOS and Android; both just offer different features. Which would be best for you depends on your budget and desired use.

Tips on Switching From iPhone to Android

When it comes to switching from an iPhone to an Android, the process will depend on the model of the phone you’re moving to. If you’re moving to a Samsung device specifically, Samsung has its own Smart Transfer tool.

Samsung Smart Switch

Samsung’s Smart Switch is the simplest way to transfer all your data from an old phone to your new Galaxy device. It allows you to keep your contacts, music, photos, files, and more. It’s also compatible with most major operating systems.

Samsung Smart Switch allows four different methods of data transfer. These include:

  • Through a Wi-Fi connection,

  • with a USB cable,

  • using a PC or Mac,

  • and from external storage.

On new Samsung devices, you can find Smart Switch at Settings > Cloud and Accounts > Smart Switch. It may need to be downloaded from the Google Play Store on older phones.

It’s also possible to download the Smart Switch tool for PC and iOS on Samsung’s official website. The tool is easy to use and navigate. Once you’ve opened the app and connected the new Samsung device to your old iPhone, you just have to follow the prompts and select which information/data you want to transfer.

Please note: To transfer data using Smart Switch, both devices must have a minimum of 500MB of free space in internal memory. If you use a wired connection (USB), the devices must support a Transferring media files (MTP) USB option.

Google’s Universal Transfer

The steps are slightly different for moving from an iPhone to an Android device that isn’t Samsung, like the Pixel range. Instead, you’ll want to use Google’s universal iOS-to-Android feature.

The option to use Android’s built-in data transfer tool will appear when you turn on your new Android phone. It will require you to connect to your previous phone through cable or Wi-Fi to transfer data/information.

When you boot up your new phone, it’ll ask if you want to transfer data from your previous device. After selecting yes, follow the on-screen instructions to choose what you want to copy over. Through Google’s transfer system, it is possible to transfer:

  • Contacts

  • Photos (stored on the previous device and iCloud)

  • Videos (stored on the previous device and iCloud)

  • Calendar events

  • Messages, including SMS, MMS, iMessage, and WhatsApp

  • Any free apps (which are also available on Google Play)

  • Music

  • Notes

Please note: There are different limitations for what can be transferred over, depending on whether you’re using a cable or Wi-Fi connection. If you were to use this method, we recommend using a cable to transfer data, as Wi-Fi can’t transfer messages, call history, apps, notes, and music.

Always backup your data

The most important tip to follow when transferring data between devices is to always back it up. While modern software is usually bug-free, you never want to risk losing precious photos or important documents. Always use a third-party service like Google Drive or iCloud to back up data.

Why Switch To A Refurbished Android Phone

If you’re considering moving from iPhone to Samsung, you might want to think about buying a refurbished device. Buying refurbished phones, be it Samsung or another Android device, offers various benefits. This includes:

Cost savings

Refurbished phones are significantly cheaper than brand-new phones, even for the latest models. So, it’s a great option if you’re budget-conscious and looking to score a deal. The money you save can also be used for accessories, like cases and screen protectors.

Environmental benefits

Buying refurbished is also better for the environment, helps cut down electronic waste, and contributes to a circular economy. If you’re an eco-conscious shopper, buying refurbished is a more sustainable choice.

When buying a refurbished phone, it’s essential to purchase from a reputable seller. You can typically buy refurbished phones directly from the manufacturer, or you can opt for a third-party retailer.

If you’re shopping from a third-party retailer, we recommend considering:

  • The inspection and refurbishing process. Any reputable seller would provide information about the inspection process their refurbished devices go through, including any qualifications or certifications they have.

  • Avoid any refurbished retailers that don’t offer additional warranty and guarantees. Not only is it good for peace of mind, it shows the seller cares for their customers and provides great service.

  • One of the best ways to gauge a seller's reputation and credibility is through reviews. Check for any product reviews, like on Google’s business pages, and read up on other customers’ experiences.
