Buying a Secondhand Smartphone: What You Need to Know

Buying a secondhand phone is a tried-and-true method of saving cash when looking to upgrade your device.

But when you purchase online, you may not be able to check the condition of the phone for yourself, which means you need to rely on the word of the seller that the product is genuine. Here’s what you need to know to make sure that you're getting a great deal...

How has the phone been graded?

Do you know the actual condition of the phone? Used smartphone resellers will often have their own grading systems with a wide range of conditions. It’s essential that you click those links and read the grading description to know whether the condition meets what you’re looking for. At OzMobiles, our phones are categorised as 1 of 5 conditions. New, Ex Demo, Good, Average and Fair condition.

Has it been thoroughly tested?

Has the phone been tested thoroughly before being sold? Don’t make the mistake of purchasing a phone that doesn’t work the way you need it to because the seller didn’t check it. At OzMobiles, we use a thorough testing process to ensure that all our secondhand phones have the functionality you’d expect. This includes accessing physical damage, buttons, the operating system and battery life.

Is the phone unlocked?

Always buy a secondhand phone that is unlocked so you can use it with any sim card. Phones purchased through a telecommunications provider, such as Optus or Telstra, can be locked to a carrier, and you may be required to pay an unlocking fee to use your own sim card. All devices from OzMobiles are unlocked and will work with all Australian networks, which means you should be able to use your preferred service provider.

Is it covered by a solid return policy?

Look for a reseller with a rock-solid return policy. While physical damage can be detected instantly, it can take longer to discover malfunctioning hardware or software. Always consider the return window when you’re shopping online, and make a note of the final day when you’re allowed to return it, just in case. Here at OzMobiles, if you receive your items and they appear to be faulty or not as described, we offer our customers a free return within the first 30 days of purchase.

Is the phone covered by warranty?

Does a warranty cover the phone you're looking to purchase? Look for a warranty or guarantee that will ensure that you're buying a product in good working order. Warranties will vary in length and may depend on the grade of the refurbishment. We want you to be happy and confident with your new device from OzMobiles, so we offer a warranty of 12 months with every device. Our warranty covers any manufacturing faults, both software and physical that may occur with your device.

Where was the phone sourced from?

Do you know the origin of the phone? If the phone you're purchasing has been stolen, the original user can block the phone and render it useless. At OzMobiles, all our stock is 100% Australian, and all IMEI codes are checked before sale. This allows us to check whether a phone has been stolen, blacklisted or blocked.

If you're buying a pre-owned smartphone, make sure you're getting what you're paying for. If any of the above information isn't clear in the listing, ask the seller before you buy. By choosing to purchase through OzMobiles, you’ll have the peace of mind that you’re getting a genuine product at a competitive price.
